|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 7:00pm on Monday, repeating until October 8, 2018

$125

September 10 – October 8, Havurah
Five Monday evenings from 7-9pm.

September 10, 17, 24, October 1, 8.
Teacher: Koshin Cain

Class is limited to 20 participants, Please register early. $150 non-members, $125 members

In the class we’ll study 16 ancient Buddhist texts.  I hope by the end of the series you will have

  • An appreciation for what the Buddha himself taught, and what concepts and practices were most important to him.
  • A fuller understanding of some key Buddhist concepts and terms.
  • A feeling for the language and style of the old sutras.
  • An understanding of the ancient world that the Buddha inhabited, the context for his teaching.
  • Some ideas about how these ancient texts relate to your practice.
  • Gotten to know some of your sanghas members better.

For this class you’ll need to buy or borrow a copy of Basic Teachings of the Buddha by Glenn Wallis.

Each class will be a mixture of lecture, small group discussion, and large group discussion.  My aim is to connect the old texts we’re studying with Buddhist and Zen practice.  My hope is that you’ll bring both your analytical, philosophical self and your personal, spiritual self to each class.

Here is a list of the Buddhist concepts I hope to cover, at least briefly:

Impermanence
No Self
Reincarnation
Suffering
3 Poisons
4 Foundations of Mindfulness
4 Immeasurables
4 Noble Truths
5 Skandhas
7 Factors of Awakening
8 Fold Path
12-fold Chain of Causation

Resources I’m using:

Buddha by Karen Armstrong – A nicely written biography for a general reader.
The Buddha by John Strong – More academic than Armstrong, complete with charts and tables.
Buddha:  A Very Short Introduction by Michael Carrithers – Nice slim Oxford University Press volume.  Lots of context for Buddha’s life.
Buddhism:  A History by Noble Ross Reat.  My favorite survey.
Buddhism by David Eckel (A Great Courses lecture series) – we have this available for short term loan in the library on CD and DVD.  A nice survey for the general population.
