Dharma study series

We plan to offer several dharma study series this year. Another is planned for summer 2012–details TBA

In March 2012, Jodo John Candy led a dharma study series on “Self and World”–here’s an interview with Jodo about that subject.

What people are saying about previous dharma study series

In October 2011, Koshin Cain led a 3-part dharma study series called “The Three Big Buddhist Ideas”: Suffering, Emptiness, and Impermanence.

Here’s what some class participants had to say about it:

“It was excellent to be in discussion with people about how dissatisfaction, change, rigidity, separation worked in our lives.”

“I thought that this dharma series was very much about my everyday life – my crankiness, resistance to the flow of life, judgments. The whole package of readings, discussion and insight from Koshin opened up space for me and I have the image of myself putting down a big bag of rocks, saying ‘whew’ and going on with a much lighter step.”

“What I have been thinking about this week as the class ends, is my mind’s tendency to fixate into a set definition of who I am and what needs to be done about it. Impermanence has been a cool intellectual concept, but making it real for me involves a more continuous investigation of this fixation. I have been enjoying trying to go beyond the thoughts to a more fluid space where there is less of a need to muscle reality into something more acceptable. I really enjoyed the classes and hope they continue. Koshin has a great way of finessing a topic and including different perspectives in the room.”

“The dharma studies were, in a nutshell, splendid. Not that the ideas were new or different, but that both the format and the readings encouraged us all to take a fresh look at principal Buddhist thought from several perspectives. Koshin chose an Interesting selection of writings, from both classic and contemporary teachers. Thought provoking, practice refreshing.”
